Eagle Lake sits at 5,100 feet in the high desert of Lassen County, one of California’s largest natural lakes and one of its least photographed. This gallery collects years of work from its shores — water birds in flight, dawn reflections on glassy water, western grebes’ spectacular mating rituals, egrets hunting the shallows, and nights dark enough to photograph comets.
The lake hosts a healthy population of the Eagle Lake rainbow trout and draws seasonal concentrations of western grebes, American white pelicans, Forster’s terns, and migrating waterfowl that most wildlife photographers never see because they don’t know to look here. These images are made on location, in real light, without compositing or scene construction.
